I sincerely feel very sad today because even after many many years of being evolved, men behave like animals.
Yesterday (JUNE 29, 2012), Dr Rumi Nath, MLA from Karimganj Borkhola constituency was brutally assaulted by a mob who was angry because of her illegal second marriage to a facebook friend with whom she eloped leaving her first husband and their daughter.
The first emotion that I got after watching the news was anger. Just plain anger. How can people act so brutally? Wasnt there any humane way to express their anger about her personal life?
She is a public figure and I understand if people were angry because of her sudden change in her personal life but it is "personal". I do not think people have that right to beat her and her second husband to show their anger.
If, by law, she has done something wrong then only the law should punish her.
Secondly I felt extremely sad. Nobody has the right to beat a pregnant woman. Doesnt matter how she fell pregnant!
Third and the most important thing is the way men and women are treated in this country. About 8-10years back, a similar story had surfaced and it was a former CM of Assam who managed to get married to his girlfriend (who was also married to someone else and had a child) but nobody even raised a finger at what he had done let alone some angry mob trying to assault him.
Why is there a difference? Both the Former CM and Dr Rumi Nath has committed similar acts. Then why was Dr Nath being beaten up for her actions? Is it because she is a women and in our society women are considered powerless and also women are not supposed to do any act that destroys the integrity of a hindu marriage?
What happened to her can only explain that our society is far behimd in terms of accepting men and women as equals.
Furthermore, how about questioning those men who came to assault her. How many of them can claim that there is any integrity in their marrieges with their partner. I am sure more than 50% of them wont be able to answer it.
When men do something in our society, they are let go because they are men. But when women make the same mistake, they are treated inhumanely as possible.
